Be aware of Distracted Driving

Midlands Insurance Center wants to make everyone aware of the how important it is that distracted driving is super dangerous. Everyone does it to some degree and the more we understand it and become aware of distracted driving, the better chance we have to not doing it. Texting and driving is a dangerous combination that can lead to serious accidents on the road. While this is a problem in many parts of the world, South Carolina has been hit particularly hard by the consequences of distracted driving. As a result, it is crucial for drivers in South Carolina to be extra careful and avoid texting while driving. In this blog, we will discuss why texting and driving is so dangerous and the legal consequences of doing so in South Carolina.

First, texting while driving takes your eyes off the road and diverts your attention away from the task at hand. Even if you look away for just a few seconds, it is enough time to cause a devastating accident. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), texting while driving is six times more likely to cause an accident than driving under the influence of alcohol. Moreover, distracted driving contributes to almost 10% of all fatal crashes in the United States.

Second, South Carolina has a specific law in place that makes texting and driving illegal. According to the law, it is unlawful for any person to use a handheld wireless device to write, send, or read a text-based communication while operating a motor vehicle on a public road or highway. Violating this law can result in a fine of up to $200 and/or two points on your driving record. If the violation results in a collision, the driver can be charged with reckless driving, which carries much steeper penalties.

Furthermore, South Carolina is known for its scenic routes and beautiful landscapes. However, distracted driving can easily ruin the beauty of these roads and put innocent lives at risk. South Carolina's highways are also heavily used by commercial trucks and buses, which can cause even more severe accidents when involved in distracted driving incidents.

In conclusion, texting and driving is a dangerous combination that can lead to severe accidents and even fatalities on the road. South Carolina has taken specific measures to discourage this behavior, but it is ultimately up to individual drivers to prioritize safety and avoid texting while driving. By staying focused on the road and avoiding distractions, we can help make South Carolina's roads safer for everyone. Remember, "It can wait."

Be safe, Be smart, and Be aware of how important it is to not be distracted while driving your vehicle.
